Laying siege to Orleans, he was only a few days march from extending his empire from the Eurasian steppe to the Atlantic. In AD 453 Attila, with a huge force composed of Huns, allies and vassals drawn from his already-vast empire, was rampaging westward across Gaul (essentially modern France), then still nominally part of the Western Roman Empire. He was brought to battle on the Cataluanian Plain and defeated by a coalition hastily assembled and led by Aetius. Who was this man that saved Western Europe from the Hunnic yoke? While Attila is a household name, his nemesis remains relatively obscure.REVIEWS "a lively, often insightful account of the declining years of Roma
Lots of detail, not much action. Douglas J. Wolf Lots of detail, not much action. I was looking for history as drama and this writer is shooting for a different audience. The TV movie was much better and lead me to purchase a this book (not by the TV dramatist) and the author is writing for a Ph.d. dissertation it seems. Too scholarly for my taste.. The Last Roman Like Mr. Hughes' previous books this work is filled with both very good and very bad qualities. Unlike the previous ones this book manages to consistently rise above them to provide an interesting and informative read. The subject is a fascinating one, and on a topic that I find to be unbelievably poorly covered in the existing works. Aetius was the western Empire's last great general. After him the empire quite quickly fell into pieces. In just over twenty years after his death the western empire had ceased to exist. For twenty years he was pretty much all that was holding the empire together. He's also the guy th. "Four Stars or Five?" according to JPS. Review first posted on Amazon.co.uk on 2Four Stars or Five? Review first posted on Amazon.co.uk on 23 May 2012This is another book which I found difficult to review, hence the fact that the review is only coming up today, as opposed to last week. The difficulty for me was to determine whether this book was worth Five Stars - the top rating - or somewhat less. Interestingly, the previous reviewer (Stuart McCunn) seems to have had a similar problem, although I am not quite sure that he has addressed it in a consistent way. I am always a bit puzzled when a book's excellent rating does not correspond to - or is not really justified by - the contents of a review. This is especia.
