DESCRIPTION:

Unusually clear P. Murakami I have found this book exceptional for the extreme clarity of its explanations. It also strikes an optimal balance between theory and application. Readers would find it useful whether they intend to use Stata or some other software. In summary, I would recommend this book to any survival data analyst.. Exceptionally clear and easy to understand My background: I have used Stata for over 8 years now at the college and graduate school level. I have also had college and graduate level statistics and econometrics. However, this was my first introduction to survival analysis. What the book is NOT: The book is NOT introductory because it introduces you to statistics. It doesn't. In fact, the book assumes a fair understanding of statistics. You should know what a statistical model is, what the specific functional form means, what different distributions look like and how distributional assumptions may influence your results. Of course, interpretation of results, confidence intervals, ha. "Not a good introductory text for this subject" according to Stan Getz. This text attempts to cover the theoretical and Stata-related aspects of survival analysis. Contrary to its name, this text is not an effective "first look" at the subject. Theories, details and concepts are not introduced or explained sufficiently for the beginner to understand properly. A decent amount of statistical knowledge is assumed before you even hit page 1. This book should be called an "intermediate" introduction. It has been my experience that Stata books in general (at least the ones I possess) have this problem in common.

They also present the syntax, features, and underpinnings of Stata’s survival analysis routines. Taking a practical approach to the subject, the authors discuss how survival analysis estimators work and what information they exploit. Written by the developers of Stata’s widely used survival analysis suite, this book provides the foundation to understand various approaches for analyzing time-to-event data. This edition highlights the new aspects of Stata 10, including its power and sample-size calculations for survival data. Other update

The present edition includes new materials related to changes in Stata 9 and 10. Particularly, the addition of an entire new chapter on power, effect size, and sample size evaluations is a welcome addition for practitioners and students. The American Statistician, November 2010, Vol. The book presents the essential models, formulas, background, and relevant references in a compact and adequate manner, and then continues to present the relevant tools, their implementation, and explanation of outputs. This book is also an excellent supplement for a graduate-level survival analysis course as well as a reference book for a data analyst dealing with survival data. 4. Unlike some glorified manuals available in the market,
