nan o said First part of the book kind of dragged for me. First part of the book kind of dragged for me, but it really picks up in the middle. Author is very gifted at creating a vivid picture in your mind.. "Couldn't put it down" according to Frances Loshin-Turso. Excellent story. Couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read the sequel. Definite worth reading. Love a strong female heroine.. I liked it but I enjoyed many things about this novel, a Russian girl in China caught between a political struggle. The historical setting was top notch. I thought the novel went on too long and the ending was flat. After having read it I questioned the title using the word 'concubine'.
