ICE: Current keeper of the Malazan flame Joel Underwood After grinding through the seemingly endless pontification that marks the first two installments of Erikson's Kharkanas Trilogy, "Dancer's Lament" is like opening a window in a stuffy room to find that Spring has returned! Several beloved characters are back, but in prequel form. The primary difference is that this is problematic in Kharkanas, as it results in a lack of narrative tension; we already know the fates of so many of these characters. Esslemont however somehow manages the exact opposite effect; with each favorite character introduced at a younger age, the knowledge o. Great! Robert Johnston Malazan world is back with a vengeance. This read is not a standalone. It's woven into the whole and demands that the reader have already read the 10 volume Malazans. This narrative touches on characters that will only be discovered and hinted in the main sequence. This prequel is a decade or so before the main sequence (lifetimes in the 300,000 year story are notional). Here is a back story to the more youthful constituents of the Bridgeburners, Crimson Guard, the Malazan super Mages, Dancer and his future assassins, and another curious hinting at Ascendancy, Elder Gods, and Az. Ahhhhhh Telorast Ian C Esselmont has hit his stride both as a writer and a story teller. Dancer's Lament begins a rich development of Malazan history without coming across as a prequel. The relationships of the characters are unexpected and complex. The book stands on it's own without suggesting that the characters have a future in an epic series, so I believe it would be a great choice for someone who has never heard of Malazan Book of the Fallen. For those who have read and reread MBotF, what can I say It's sweet.

Dancer's Lament focuses on the genesis of the empire, and features Dancer, the skilled assassin, who, alongside the mage Kellanved, would found the Malazan empire.. Esslemont's all-new prequel trilogy takes readers deeper into the politics and intrigue of the New York Times bestselling Malazan Empire
