Paksenarrion--Paks, for short--refuses her father's orders to marry the pig farmer down the road and is off to join the army. And so her adventure begins--the adventure that transforms her into a hero remembered in songs, chosen by the gods to restore a lost ruler to his throne.
took great care to present a hard topic rarely truly included One of, if not the, first major fantasy story to feature a female hero I have read the whole series multiple times. The first it was loaned to me by a friend who wanted to share. Then a few years later I hunted it down to buy so I could read it and keep a copy for myself. Then when I finished, I loaned my books out to another friend's daughter, because I wanted to shareThe Hero herself is never interested in sexual relations so other than brief mentions of subject it isn't an issue in the story. There are no explicit sex scen. voracious reader said Addictive read. I've loved other Elizabeth Moon series and this, as well as the other two of the series, are very good reads. The title put me off at first but has nothing to do with sheep farming. The main character, Paksennarion, goes off with a mercenary group. The story moves well, maintaining interest all the way through while creating a medieval fantasy world. Moon has the mechanics of writing down much better than many in the fantasy and sci-fi genres (she also writes sci-fi) so reading flows well. Paks is an engaging character. Very . Paks rocks! A friend of mine talked me into reading this book. I have read all of Elizabeth Moon's books except for the Paksenarrion series. (I recommend the Serrano series). Anyways, Paks surprised me. I couldn't wait for the next two books, Divided Allegiance and Oath of Gold, to arrive in the mail.Paks learns that a warrior's life is different from what she expected. She is a humble, ferocious fighter. She experiences lots of turmoil and perseveres. Elizabeth Moon does an excellent job with characters and their inner struggles. If you
